The Netherlands Suzanne Schulting holds off Koreas Min-jeong Choi in a tense finish to defend her womens short track 1000m title at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

. BEIJING Reuters Netherlands Suzanne Schulting set an Olympic record to ease into the quarter-finals of the short track speed skating 500-metre event at the Beijing Games on Saturday. Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands won. Still Schulting will be the woman to beat in the event.

Schulting was the silver medalist behind Fontana in the 500 in Beijing. Home favorites Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei crashed out of either the semifinals or quarterfinals. In the B final American Corinne Stoddard finished third and Maame Biney was fifth.

Schultings victory four years ago at the Pyeongchong Games was the first short track gold medal for the Netherlands a country best known for its dominant long track speedskaters.

Schultings gold medal was the 50th for the Netherlands at the Winter Olympics while Chois silver was South Koreas 50th medal of any colour in Olympic short track speed skating. Skater Kristen Santos won her individual race to advance. Schulting and Van Kerkhof had won bronze at the 2018 Games with Lara van Ruijven who died suddenly at the age of 27 in July 2020.

The 24-year-old who is hoping to achieve a clean sweep at the Capital Indoor Stadium skated the distance in 42379 seconds to beat the previous mark set by South Koreas Choi Min. In the B final American Corinne Stoddard finished third and Maame Biney was fifth. In mens part Liu Shaoang won the mens 500m event giving Hungary its first gold in an individual event at these Winter Games.

She was the first non-Asian winner of the event. Van Ruijven was at a training camp in France when she was taken. She entered the Winter Olympics with momentum in the 1000m having placed second.
